Parish History (1964-98)

Our Parish history began in 1964 when two Canterbury women, Theresa Pukalo and Lillian Waskiewicz contacted and met with the Chancery office in Norwich about the possibility of establishing a Chapel in Canterbury to serve the Catholic community there.

Prepared with a list of the Catholic population of Canterbury, they met with the Chancellor and the Vicar General in August. In September they were asked for a map of the town and an accurate census. In January of 1965 the Chancery office began looking at parcels of land.

In April 1966 land was purchased for the Chapel by the office of the bishop with that year's Diocesan Development Fund and a personal donation of $1000 from Bishop Vincent J. Hines.

Plans were drawn up and construction began in the Spring of 1968. The dedication was held on September 15, 1968, and the first confirmation class was held on that date as well.

From 1965 on, masses were offered at the Grange Hall until completion of the new chapel.

St. Augustine's was the first Roman Catholic Chapel in the town of Canterbury. Rev. Leo Lavallee, the first pastor, headed a long list of priests to share the first ten years of the church: Fr. Phillippe Lillette, pastor of St. John's in Plainfield and St. Augustine Chapel, Fr. Charles Palmer, Fr. Russell Wise, Fr. Marcel LaChance, Fr. Francis Sullivan, Fr. Anthony Currano, and Fr. Hugh McIldowney.

St. Augustine was formed in 1968 as a mission of St. John's Church in Plainfield. It grew to be an independent parish in 1978 under the pastoral guidance of Father Joseph Ricard as its first pastor.Father RicardFr. Regalado

Over the years there were new renovations and expansions in both structure and community and in 1988 Father Gonzalo Regalado took over and carried the parish through another decade of growth.

Fr. McKennaIn 1998, Father Frank McKenna was made pastor of the parish, and ten years later, in 2008, the church was yoked with Fr. PeterSt.John's in Plainfield, with Father Arul Rajan Peter as its Administrator, who had been most recently the Administrator of St. Stephen's in Quinebaug, CT.
